Keeping Your Cool: How To De-Stress While Moving

If you’re moving, you know how stressful it is—and relocating is incredibly challenging if you’re moving to a new city or state. Here, we’ll dig into some tips that can help you stay organized, lower your stress levels, and make the moving process as smooth as possible.

Make a List

When you’re going through the process of a move, it’s normal to have endless to-do items floating around in your head. So every time something comes to mind, write it down. If it’s easier, you can do this digitally in the notes app on your phone. If you’re moving as a family, post the list (or share it digitally) so that everyone in your home can add to it and check off tasks as they get accomplished.

Ask for Help

Ask family and friends to help if you need it. This doesn’t only mean packing up boxes (although that can be super helpful). Family and friends can entertain your kids while you make phone calls, make runs to the store to get last-minute groceries after your pots and pans are packed, or take care of one last mow of the lawn after you have packed your equipment.

Set Up in Advance

You’ll want to make the transition to your new home as simple as possible. Take care of utilities in advance. Arriving at your new home with the water flowing, electricity working, and trash service activated can all make it easier to unpack and get settled in.

Take Time to Chill

When you’re in the middle of a move, it’s normal for the moving process to consume your every thought. So if you can swing it, take a break for even an hour — to go for a walk, enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend, or just zone out watching a favorite show. Taking time to de-stress can make you more productive in the long run.

Prioritize Exercise

When you’re making plans for your move and you’re busy packing, you may be tempted to put off exercising. However, exercise can be essential in helping you manage stress. So, though it will be a challenge, designate some time for physical activity every day.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

It can be tough to prepare healthy meals and eat well once your pots and pans are packed. However, doing the best you can to continue with your regular healthy routine can help keep stress at bay. Once you’re no longer able to cook in your kitchen, try to rely on healthy takeout options, fresh produce, and lean non-perishable proteins so that you’re able to keep your energy up as you complete the moving process. Also, don’t forget to stay hydrated — packing and picking up boxes is a workout.
