Strategies for Handling Move-Out Day

Moving day marks a significant milestone in the process of relocating your household. While weeks or even months of planning usually precede this day, there are still several crucial tasks to handle when the day arrives. Here’s how you can effectively manage move-out day to make the process smoother and less stressful.

1. Set Aside Essential Items

Prepare a “first-night box” with necessities you will need immediately upon arrival at your new home. Clearly label this box and keep it in your vehicle to ensure it’s easily accessible. Ensure it contains toiletries, a change of clothes, essential kitchen items, and any important documents or medications.

2. Create a Detailed Inventory

Creating an inventory of your belongings is vital for keeping track of everything during the move. Label all boxes clearly and take photos of valuable items for reference. This will also help you unpack and quickly spot if anything is missing.

3. Clean Your Home Thoroughly

Before the movers arrive, give your home a thorough clean. While you may need to do some final touch-ups once your belongings are out, tackling big tasks beforehand can make a significant difference:

  • Deep clean carpets and floors.
  • Wash windows and wipe down blinds and surfaces.
  • Clean the kitchen appliances, including the fridge, dishwasher, stove, and oven.
  • Wipe down walls and remove any smudges.
  • Empty and clean cabinets, drawers, and closets.
  • Disinfect bathroom surfaces.

Ensure you have enough trash bags and dispose of your trash correctly.

4. Prepare Your Home for Movers

Before the movers arrive, take steps to protect your home and make the move easier:

  • If you are packing yourself, complete it before the movers arrive.
  • Cover sharp corners on large items with padding to prevent damage.
  • Measure doorways and staircases to ensure furniture can pass through easily.
  • Use furniture sliders for heavy items to avoid damaging floors.
  • Protect floors with materials like rosin paper or floor shields.
  • Remove wall hangings such as pictures, mirrors, and shelving items.

Inform the moving company of any unique challenges, such as narrow stairways or awkward room layouts.

5. Plan for Movers at the New Home

Remember to prepare your old space for the movers and arrange when they will arrive at your new location. There are various considerations based on where you are moving, such as:

  • Inform your movers about potential obstacles (small staircase, parking, moving hours, etc.).
  • Ensure the movers have a parking spot close to the new home.
  • Book the elevator ahead if you are moving into an apartment building.
  • Stay available on moving day in case the movers have questions or need direction.
  • Watch weather reports to avoid any incoming weather.

6. Communicate with Your Movers

Clear communication will ensure everyone is on the same page and help the movers perform their job efficiently.

When the movers arrive, greet them and discuss the day’s plan. Share any specific instructions or concerns about particular items or areas of the house.

7. Ensure Kids and Pets are Safe

Relocating can be overwhelming and hectic, especially when you have children and pets to consider. Make arrangements for your children and pets to visit a friend or relative’s house. Or have a trusted person help you monitor them when movers are doing the work.

8. Conduct a Final Walk-Through

Once the movers have loaded everything onto the truck, do a final walk-through of your home to ensure nothing is left behind. Pay attention to commonly overlooked areas like basements, attics, and outdoor sheds. In apartment complexes, check storage lockers or shared areas. Lastly, turn off lights and dispose of any remaining trash.
