Creating Your Moving Essentials Kit

Making a moving essentials kit is one way to guarantee that your move goes without a hitch. Continue reading to find out what that is and how to create one.

What Exactly is Your Essentials Box?

The box containing your necessities should be the last thing you pack and the first thing you open when you relocate. It has all the basics you’ll require right away. Most people prefer to keep this box in their personal vehicle for the duration of the trip.

You don’t want to waste time rummaging around for this carton. These are the things that you can’t pack away weeks, or even days, before the big move.

What You Should Have in Your Essentials Box

So, what does this box of necessities contain? Include at least the following.

  • All prescription medications
  • Personal toiletries
  • Toothbrush
  • Shampoo
  • Soap
  • Towels
  • Toilet paper
  • Change of clothes
  • Food
  • Water
  • Chargers
  • Other electronic accessories
  • Tool kit
  • First aid box
  • Trash bags
  • Plates
  • Cutlery
  • Cups
  • Napkins

In addition, if you have young children, this is the box to put their favorite thing to cuddle with and a book to read before bed. Otherwise, it would be frustrating on your first night to have to rummage through many boxes searching for their favorite stuffed animal and other comfort items.

Packing Your Essentials Box

Early on, make a list of essential items that you will need to include. Then, keep this list inside the box for quick reference.

Assign one of your moving cartons as the “essentials” box. Add items to the box as you pack. Of course, you won’t be able to put some things in there until closer to the move, but one strategy would be to place your items in there and use them as you need them, then put them back in that designated box when you are done using them.

Wait to seal this essentials box, and don’t mix it with your other moving boxes. Instead, keep this box separate from the others. Consider keeping it near your bed or in another designated location, and make sure it is labeled clearly.

Keeping Track of Your Essentials Box

Apply a colorful strip of masking tape to the side of the box to make it stand out from the others, and ensure you label it “essentials box.”

Reserve a spot for this carton in your car, as it should always stay with you and not go with the moving truck.

Regardless of your organization, moving into a new home is stressful and chaotic.

Moving All Your Essentials

It can be thrilling and revitalizing to move. However, it can help you feel more in control if you pack a moving essentials kit with the most necessary items.
