5 Tips for Settling in After a Move

Settling in quickly after a residential move is essential. Once you settle in, your new place will feel more like home, and you’ll be able to think about something besides unpacking. There are many things you can do to settle in after a move. Taking proactive steps can help you feel good about your new home. The following five suggestions can help:

1. Set Goals

Make a list of what you need to do before you consider yourself “settled in.” This list may include things like “unpack all boxes,” “repaint the bedroom,” and “replace the locks on the door.”

Whatever you need to get done so you can feel like you have completed your relocation, put it on your list. Next, make a deadline for each task on your to-do list. A list of goals and deadlines for completing each item can feel good. You’ll feel even better when you check items off the list. Assign some of your tasks to different household members if you need to. Having help with your goals can make settling in that much easier.

2. Give Yourself Time

You may feel anxious to settle in completely, but giving yourself time to finish the process is essential. The more you push yourself to be fast, the more stressful the settling-in process will seem. Remind yourself that you just went through a relocation and deserve to take the settling-in process more slowly.

3. Remember to Have Fun

Even though you’re trying to unpack and get your house in a condition that makes you feel comfortable, having fun is still important. Plan to explore your neighborhood and get to know your neighbors. If you’re new to the city or state, plan to visit some local tourist attractions to learn more about your new community. Take days off from unpacking to watch movies, read books, and “live” in your space.

4. Plan a Housewarming Party

It feels like home once you’ve invited friends and loved ones to visit. Planning a housewarming party is a great way to make your new home feel like it’s truly yours. Give yourself some time before holding your housewarming party, then when you’re ready, make it happen. Some tips:

  • Make your housewarming party easy on yourself by having a potluck.
  • Don’t worry too much about the decorations. Everyone knows you just moved – they won’t blame you if you want to keep it simple.
  • Plan to play games to keep the party moving and make it fun.

5. Decorate Your Home Last

Make decorating your home the last item on your “to-do” list. Decorating is arguably the least important part of settling in and decorating after unpacking is better. Decorating after you have unpacked the last box makes it easy to tell what decorations you need to buy and where to put them.
