6 Amazing Museums to Visit in Miami, FL

Miami may be most famous for its beautiful beaches and tropical weather, but it’s also rich in history and culture. There’s no better way to explore this fascinating city than through its many museums.

If you’re considering moving to Miami, FL, exploring local art, culture, and history is a great way to get to know your new hometown. Here are a few favorite Miami museums.

History Miami Museum

Miami’s fascinating past and present come to life at History Miami Museum. This local institution has been telling the city’s stories for over 80 years, with a robust collection documenting Miami, Southern Florida, and the Caribbean.

Vast collections of photographs, documents, and objects present the city and region in a new light. Stroll through the galleries, watch a musical performance, or take an educational cruise.

Institute of Contemporary Art Miami

Art lovers will want to attend the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami. Collections contain innovative works by significant artists. From paintings to sculptures to multi-media, human creativity is on display.

Explore the artworks outside on the grounds, too. Check out the educational programming, performances, and interactive opportunities available year-round.

Coral Castle Museum

Ready for something completely different? The Coral Castle Museum fits the bill! One man, Edward Leedskalnin, created this unique attraction. For 30 years, he labored secretly to create a sculpture garden in honor of a lost love, using hand tools to move and transform more than 1,100 tons of coral stones.

Today, you can stroll through the garden and marvel at working telescopes, rocking chairs, and more. But, Leedskalnin’s creations are still a mystery — can you decipher them?

Perez Art Museum

The Perez Art Museum is packed with 20th and 21st-century art, all created by Latin American, Caribbean, African, and African Diaspora artists. In addition, exhibitions feature artworks from around the region and the world.

There’s always something new to see. Highlights include the world’s largest immersive kaleidoscope and exhibitions that interpret the region’s history and culture through a creative lens.

Coral Gables Museum

The Coral Gables Museum is about this planned community’s history, present, and future, designed and founded in the 1920s.  Exhibits focus on architecture, urban design, and the environment.

The facility in Coral Gables, FL,  is a historic site with old police and fire stations and lovely grounds. The museum offers a schedule of events and exhibits featuring art, documents, and commentary from and about Coral Gables.

The Bass

Design, architecture, and fashion come together at The Bass. Here you’ll find a diverse collection of contemporary art from around the globe, all housed in a reimagined Art Deco building. Browse more than 16,000 feet of exhibit space, all with a nod to the spirit and vibe of Miami.

Collections include ever-changing exhibitions from international, regional, and local artists. While the focus is on contemporary art, there’s also a collection of historical objects on view. After you’ve enjoyed the galleries, stop by the gift store and enjoy refreshments at the cafe.

There’s so much to see, do, and learn at Miami’s unique museums — and these are just a few of our favorites.
