5 Moving Mistakes to Avoid

A household relocation involves so many moving parts that it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Whether this is your first move or 5th, moving mistakes can strike at any moment.

But when you’re in the middle of a move, the last thing you want is for the process to get derailed by an avoidable mishap. So here’s a list of five typical moving mistakes — and how to avoid them.

1. Poor Packing Technique

Packing methodically and organizing as you go may take more time upfront, but it’ll save you time and frustration once you have moved. Keep like items with other like items, and clearly label each box. You can even write a quick inventory of each container’s contents on a note and then tape it to the box.

Keep an eye on box weight, as well. Over-packing boxes result in heavy, hard-to-lift containers that are more likely to break open in transit.

2. Forgetting to Switch Your Utilities

Imagine reaching your new home on moving day, only to find that there’s no hot water or electricity.

Contact your current utility companies such as power, water, sewer, garbage, gas, internet, cable, and phone a few weeks before the move . Let them know your move date and settle any unpaid balances.

Next, contact the utilities that service your new home and tell them your move-in date. Just be sure to take care of this task well ahead of moving.

3. Not Decluttering

Decluttering takes time and can feel overwhelming. But paring down your possessions before a move just makes sense.  You’ll avoid packing and unpacking things you don’t need.

A few months out from moving day, start going through your things. Categorize your belongings into the following groups:

  • Keep
  • Donate
  • Sell
  • Recycle or discard

As an added perk, you can often sell unwanted (usable) items at a yard sale or on social media and make a little extra money for your move!

4. Packing Non-Allowable Items

Did you know that there are things reputable moving companies can’t move? Certain substances and items — including almost all things flammable, explosive, and corrosive — are included on what’s known as a “non-allowable” list. As a result, regulations prevent such items from being transported on moving trucks.

While each moving company will provide you with specifics, everyday items on the no-go list include:

  • Batteries
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Live plants and animals
  • Oil and gas, including compressed gas
  • Any illegal items or substances

Check with your professional moving company to learn about the restrictions!

5. Waiting Too Long to Schedule Movers

Nothing makes your move easier than hiring a moving service to do the heavy lifting for you. But there’s one thing you need to know: Movers book up fast. That means scheduling well in advance is key.

Start your search for a moving company at least a few months out. That gives you enough time to check online reviews, gather a few estimates, and make an informed decision.

Remember that certain times of year fill up extra fast, such as spring and summer. So if you’re planning on moving during these popular months, give yourself plenty of lead time to find an available mover.
