Bedroom Packing Guide
Packing a bedroom poses a unique challenge. After all, you’ll typically need to use this room right up until moving day, and it’s one of the first rooms you need to unpack when you arrive at your new home.
Prioritizing what, how, and when to pack this room is vital, but it might be confusing. The last thing you want is to miss a good night’s sleep when you need it!
Read on for a guide to packing your bedroom for a move.
Sort and Purge
Before starting the packing process, set aside the time to sort through your belongings decluttering and organizing — the goal: Fewer items to pack and move.
If possible, start the purge process at least a few weeks before moving day. Go through each item in your bedroom and sort them into the following categories:
- Keep
- Sell
- Donate
- Recycle/Trash
Keep your new bedroom’s size and storage capacity in mind when deciding what to take.
Bonus: Sell items you no longer want at a yard sale or online, and make a few bucks for your move. Be sure to dispose of electronic items properly.
Gather Bedroom Packing Supplies
If you’re like most people, you’ve got a few sets of linens to pack. The good news is that blankets and pillows are perfect for those large boxes that would otherwise be too heavy.
Start by gathering:
- Cardboard boxes in a variety of sizes
- Large plastic bags, such as garbage bags or vacuum seal bags
- Bubble wrap
- Packing paper
- Packing tape
- Pens and notepad
- Furniture blankets
- Plastic wrap
Preparing Linens
Before you pack, wash, and thoroughly dry sheets, pillowcases, blankets, and duvet covers. This will ensure a clean start in your new home, and you won’t have to worry about any musty, mildewy smells when you unpack your linens.
Once linens are clean, fold them neatly. Next, organize sheets and blankets by size or room, and place the folded linens in a large plastic or vacuum seal bag.
Moving linens in a waterproof container will help keep them fresh. You can then place the bags of linens in a large box or bin or use the filled bags as padding for other items.
Packing Order
A bit of planning will help smooth the packing process. First, determine the items you’ll need to use most right up until moving day — such as bed linens, clothing, and furniture — and set those items aside.
Start by packing the items you use the least, such as off-season clothing, extra sets of sheets and blankets, guest bedroom furniture, and so on. Then, as you pack, keep like with like. For instance, fill a packing box with only sheets, pillows, and blankets of the same size.
For each box, create a list of all the items inside on a notepad. Next, tape the list on the top of the packing box, along with the room the box belongs to. Then, when it’s time to unpack, you’ll be able to identify what goes where easily.
On the morning of moving day, pack up the remaining items. Create a special box with the sheets, pillows, blankets, and other bedroom items that you’ll need that night. Clearly label this box as one of the first to open in your new home.
