How to Efficiently Relocate in a Hurry

Moving can be overwhelming, especially if you need to move right away. Perhaps you’ve been hired at a job you need to start immediately, or you sold your home faster than expected— now you’ve got to move quickly.

Here are some tips on how to move in a hurry.

Find a Mover

You want to find a professional household mover immediately. Concentrate on one that can make short-notice moves. Request recommendations from friends and family, and read online reviews. Then, invite two or three to your house for cost estimates.

Make a List

You’ll also need a plan for your move. List all the tasks, such as sorting and disposing of items you don’t need, transferring utilities, and notifying your children’s school. Begin working through your tasks immediately.

Let the Mover Pack

Using the mover’s packing service can save you a lot of time and may save you money on a last-minute move. If you don’t have to do your own packing, you’ll have more time to devote to tasks such as sorting, and you may be able to give away, sell, or throw away more items. The fewer items you have to move, the lower your cost.

Sort

Moving is a great time to dispose of things you haven’t used for years or clothing that no longer fits. Sort your belongings into four piles: keep, sell, donate, and throw away.

Sell items quickly through a yard sale or ads on websites such as Craig’s List. Call charities that will pick up things you hope to donate. Call your locality or trash pickup company to find out when and how to prepare those items you want to discard. Consider a junk removal company if you have many things to discard.

Pack a Moving Essentials Box

Before the packing begins, find a duffel bag or box to hold essential items you’ll need right away. Then pack toiletries, medicines, a towel, a washcloth, necessary documents, phone chargers, a change of clothes, pet food, a child’s favorite toy, and anything else you won’t have time to search for.

Ask for Help

Many people find it difficult to ask for assistance, but a last-minute decision is not the time to be timid. Your friends and family will probably be willing to help you stay on track, sort, or organize your yard sale. Be sure to repay them by ordering food on days they are helping or by inviting them over for a meal at your new home.

Consider Storage

Sometimes you must relocate so quickly you can only finalize your new destination after the move. As a result, you’ll want to put most of your items in storage for a time. Many professional moving companies provide affordable storage options.
