The Ultimate List of Household Items You Should Purge Before Your Move

Reducing the amount of stuff you own makes sense before packing up for a move. This will save you time, effort, and money. It’s also a good idea to purge certain items before your household move. Let us look at the most important things to consider minimizing today.

In the Kitchen

Kitchens often have cluttered areas, including cabinets, drawers, and pantries. Several of these are items you should plan to throw out, donate, give away, recycle, or sell.

  • Expired food pantry items
  • Old spices that are past their peak
  • Leftover foods in the refrigerator
  • Expired foods in the refrigerator
  • Bulk foods that are unexpired and perfect for donating
  • Duplicate kitchen gadgets
  • Old takeout containers perfect for recycling

Look around your kitchen to see what you genuinely don’t need or isn’t good anymore. The less bulk you pack, the easier it’ll be to get settled in your new home.

In the Bathroom

Bathrooms become a cluttered mess over time. Before you begin packing out your bathroom, plan to clean it thoroughly.

  • Old cosmetics
  • Almost empty shampoo and conditioner bottles
  • Expired beauty products

Chances are you have old toothbrushes, hairbrushes, and other worn items.

In the Bedroom

If you look in your bedroom, you’ll probably find many items you don’t need to bring to your new home. Top things to donate, give away, or sell from your closet, include the following.

  • Clothing you don’t wear anymore
  • Clothing that doesn’t fit
  • Worn-out shoes, sandals, and sneakers
  • Children’s clothing – If your kids are grown, find someone else who can use their old clothing items

In the end, you’ll have less clothing and shoes to pack and will enjoy plenty of room in your dressers and closets in your new home.

In the Linen Closet

The linen closet and other storage spaces are probably loaded with items you don’t need, such as:

  • Duplicate sheets and pillowcases (save a spare for each bed and seasonal sheets if you have them)
  • Mismatched bed linens
  • Excess blankets and comforters
  • Old bed linens
  • Used, mismatched towel sets

If you have linens that aren’t nice enough to give away or donate, use them as packing materials and cleaning rags.

Throughout the House

The above three rooms will likely reduce much bulk before your move, but you don’t have to stop there. Consider purging the following items.

  • Unused or broken toys and games
  • Outdated electronics
  • Books you will never read again
  • Non-essential paperwork

Many of these items can either be: a) donated, b) recycled, c) scanned and converted to digital, or d) sold on eBay (particularly an excellent niche for those buyers looking to replace lost game pieces).

Large Items in Your Home

Getting rid of oversized items in your home requires careful thought. Many pieces are either big, bulky, won’t fit, or look nice in your new space. Large items to consider letting go of include:

  • Furniture
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Machinery and tools
  • Old baby furniture and equipment
  • Outdated home gym equipment

If you use these things, that’s one thing, but if you don’t, why pay to move heavy items that’ll collect dust or be put back into storage anyway?

Pro tip: Remember to check your attic, basement, garage, or storage shed for large items you don’t need to take with you.
