Tips for a Short-Distance Move to Make it Smoother

Moving can be a particularly stressful experience if you’re traveling far to reach your new home. However, although short-distance moves might seem more manageable, they come with their own challenges.

So, here are suggestions to help you make the most out of your short-distance move so that it goes as smoothly as possible.

Create a Packing List

When preparing for any move, the first thing you need to do is organize your belongings and pack them efficiently. Unfortunately, people will often toss random stuff into boxes, meaning that they’ll wind up searching for everything once they arrive.

Writing down a packing list ensures that you can maximize every box or container you have. Ideally, you can put a list of each item inside the box on top. This way, you don’t have to rifle through it all for something specific. Instead, you can read the list and move on if it’s not there.

Sort Essentials From Non-Essentials

When packing for a move, the best thing for you to do is to separate your essentials, such as personal hygiene products, clothing, and kitchen wares. You’ll need these items immediately after moving, so you want to make sure you have them handy. Otherwise, you can wind up scrambling to find something crucial, making it harder to adjust to your new home.

Consider Your Timeline

How much overlap will you have between moving out of your old place and into your new one? If you have a few days or weeks and are going the DIY route, you can start making trips as soon as possible. This way, you can begin placing items in your new home and organizing them as you go, rather than trying to handle it all at once.

If the plan is to take care of everything in one day, create a schedule. The best option is to start at the end of the day and work backward.

Plan for Everything

Even if you’re moving a short distance, your move will probably require maneuvering through tight, awkward areas and lifting heavy lifting like:

  • Couches
  • Tables
  • Dressers
  • Antique furniture
  • Pianos

You will probably need help. It can be a significant challenge to move things like this yourself or with the help of some buddies without damage or personal injury. Local household movers have the equipment, personnel, and experience to move these things safely and efficiently.

Ask for Help

One of the primary advantages of a short-distance move is that it’s often easier to enlist help from friends and family members. Even if they aren’t helping with the heavy lifting, they can help with watching your children and pets or even helping you unpack at the other end.

When asking for help, be sure to do so as early as possible, and plan for some people to back out at the last minute. Also, don’t forget to show appreciation with free food and snacks throughout the day.

If possible, create timelines for everyone helping so that you can take care of multiple projects simultaneously.
